Here's a good way to start a new thread. The Red Sox and Orioles are the participants in the first brawl of the season: atmlb.com/qu2bmTFor those who haven't seen highlights of the whole incident, Ortiz was upset about a couple of inside pitches from Gregg earlier in the at-bat. The benches cleared once, but nothing came of it. Both teams were warned, and on the next pitch, all hell broke loose. IMO, Mike Estabrook did an EXCELLENT job by tossing Gregg as soon as he gestured at Ortiz. When Ortiz charged the mound, all the crew could do was take numbers and toss.

I saw nothing wrong with the pitches to Ortiz. Nothing was thrown at his head. In baseball, the pitcher has every right to throw inside and try to push the hitter away from the plate. To me, Ortiz was the culprit all the way.

I was watching the game when this happened. As cj said, Ortiz really was the culprit. He had no business getting bent out of shape about that pitch. I thought Mike Estabrook did as well as he could have given the circumstances. And a nice job by Jeff Nelson sorting what was as bizarre a situation as I have seen in a long time. Remember, there was an issue regarding whether or not a run scored on the play. This likely would have been a sacrifice fly had Ortiz not charged the mound. The runner from third, instead of scoring, headed to the mound to either participate in or break up the fight. He was called out for running out of the baseline, creating an inning-ending double play. I'm just glad I didn't have to sort all that out.

What happened last night is EXACTLY what is wrong with this 'warning' business. For a few years now, it seems like the Red Sox have pulled this scam where one of their pitchers hits a guy, both benches get warned, and suddenly the Sox get nice fat pitches in the middle of the plate to hit. So last night, Ortiz, who leans over the plate so much, his belly is almost on top of the plate, gets a couple of pitches under his chins and over his belly, and starts WHINING about it.
And is this any surprise that this happens in a Sox/Orioles game? This garbage is pretty much SOP for both managers....

The high amount of ejections lately are ALL the fault of the players and managers. They do not have a right to argue any judgement calls. see rule 9;02a

That was a bang-bang play that could've gone either way. C. Getz deserved to get tossed. Hallion is one of the best umps in the game. He tried to walk away and ignore him, but Getz didn't stop.
