Hochuli's crew has benn horrible so far, Most specifically Ron Torbert. He called a facemask when the defender was only holding on to the side of the pads and kind of jerked the runner down. It looked bad but was nowhere near a facemask. Torbert threw the first flag from 10 yards downfield so I am not sure how he could have seen a facemask. Mark Hittner was right next to the play and did not call a facemask. You could see from the body language as well as his discussion with Torbert and Hochuli that he did not agree with the facemask flag at all. Then Torbert called a holding call that was just nowehere near a hold. To me it just looked like a good pancake blaock. You are aloud to get knocked to the ground in football sometimes, right? There was a fight on the sidelines with Percy Harvin and a Panther and punches were thrown. None of the officials saw it though. Can you use instant replay to see if punches are thrown? Video here: bit.ly/vhzpnlLooks like Wrolstad was closest. Sometimes its hard to catch everything while you are wading into the bench, everone's taller than you, and you can't see around people. But seriously; how dumb is Harvin to take on the entire Panther bench.

Yup...two straight weeks Winter in the Meadowlands, today NYG-MIA. The over/under for accepted penalties is 12 (just checked with Vegas)....I'll take the over even though Mike thinks they missed a couple (against the Giants of course!).... Looks like I lose....but seriously is it possible the league office had a talk with Winter to cut the ticky tacky stuff after last week's fiasco with the Jets and Chargers?

A few weeks ago I saw Boris Cheek working with a lanyard whistle. He is back using a finger whistle - what he's worn his entire NFL career. Looks like he experimented a little bit.

If the Patriots would have challenged that catch by #87 at the goal line, Carey would have reversed Cheek's call and given NE a TD. Semi-moot since NE scored anyway, but it took some extra time off the clock.

That's poor officiating if you make a call based on "if you're wrong you can get bailed out on replay".

Carey missed an illegal batting on the Brady fumble.

Nothing the officials can do, but that did look like an illegal bat on replay

Looks like an illegal bat by the Steelers to ice the game away with a safety. The officials didn't call the foul. The U or LJ could have called that one.

I'd give Carey's crew a 3.0 for today's game. Minimal amount of errors and overall they officiated a good game.

Tough last few minutes...they missed the NE touchdown as described above but Belechek was in a tough spot.....he needed the time out and really couldn't risk losing a time out but if you noticed Brady took a long time to run the next play like he was waiting for a challenge flag or somebody in the NE upstairs booth but CBS never showed a replay till well after the fact....cost the Pats a good 25 seconds or more which might have changed their thinking a tad at the end....then it was a close call whether the ball was batted on the subsequent fumble by Brady or the Pittsburgh defender was reaching out for the ball....could have gone either way I suppose although I think it was batted don't know if it was intentionally batted....but doesn't that mean the impetus of putting the ball into the end zone was the defender and therefore it should have been a touchback?
My other thought is although one might think it's poor officiating it seems to me they have been following the when in doubt call it a touchdown and the automatic review. When you set up the ir rule that they only automatically review scoring plays, perhaps they should change it that any play thgat could resulot in a score is automatically reviewed (I know the objection it would slow the game down but we saw a perfect example of the pandora's box this can cause.
As far as Carey, it's been a tough year and I will bring up the miss of the running into the kicker in the Jet-Raven game and then the fumble/empty hand call against Sanchez which was very very close one way or the other but on the play there was a clear roughing the passer that the NFL ultimately fined the Raven defender 25g.
If ratings are what counts, his crew would seem to be in a lot of trouble as far as playoffs are concerned. What else do you guys think?

Fred....everybody is entitled to their opinion of course but the crew missed a touchdown and what looked like an illegally batted ballo and I think called a safety on a play that was really a touchbak unless I can be convinced otherwise (the impetus of putting the ball into the end zone was the defender, wasn't it?

Carey missed an illegal batting on the Brady fumble. Video: bit.ly/steNqsHad that bat been called they would have walked off the yardage from either the spot of the fumble or the spot of the foul (whichever is best for the offended team) and NE would have kept the ball.
