Carey's crew had a pretty good game overall. Cheek missed the TD near the goal line and I thought that T. Polamalu should have been flagged for an illegal bat.
Grade: 3.2

I'd give Carey's crew a 3.0 for today's game. Minimal amount of errors and overall they officiated a good game. Fred....everybody is entitled to their opinion of course but the crew missed a touchdown and what looked like an illegally batted ballo and I think called a safety on a play that was really a touchbak unless I can be convinced otherwise (the impetus of putting the ball into the end zone was the defender, wasn't it? Well, a 3.0 out 4 is not a very good rating, so I think Fred agrees with you. I am a big Mike Carey fan, but I agree that he has not had a good year. He had a very rough game last week in Cleveland as well. I think a lot of it has to do with an inconsistent crew. Chad Brown worked the Super Bowl last year, but before that he got shut out of the playoffs completely. Carey has two young linesman in Dana McKenzie and Tim Podraza. While I think those two are solid officials, I am not sure it is a great idea two have two guys so young on the same crew, although it works for Corrente, Than the deep men have been historically inconsistent. Boris Cheek made a position switch after last season and ever since his super bowl, he really has kind of fallen and has been rated towards the bottom as his position each of the last few years. The other deep men Mike Weir and Kirk Dornan are veterans. Dornan usually recieves a first or second round assignment but I don't think he has ever gotten further than that and Mike Weir is extremely inconsistent when it comes to playoff assignments. At the beginning of the year, this is a crew I expected to be solid but not great. I really don't think Carey has the best crew this year. My $0.02

In the Pittsburg game they called PI on the Steelers, however the ball was tipped graned it was a Steelers tipped to another DB. Shouldn't tyhat have over rulled the PI on the plahy?

Now that I've thought about it, I'm still confused. Is it a safety because it's no different than say a punt being blocked through the end zone so I suppose if one takes the position that it wasn't deliberately batted but rather it was unintentionally batted as the deefender reached for the ball, then I suppose they had to rule it a safety. So once again, as usual, I'm wrong. Oh well.

The call was holding before the pass. You are correct that a tipped pass throws some exceptions into the PI rule; however defensive holding was the proper call in this case.

On Twitter, Periera said it looked to him like an illegal bat and if that had been called then it would have been a touchback...well I'm going to sleep now, have to be up early tomorrow. I'm sure it'll be discussed by Periera on either his plays of the week or on Tuesday's chat.

So once again, as usual, I'm wrong. Oh well. Had they ruled it an illegal bat on the defense, the foul would have been enforced in the field of play - either at the spot of the fumble (why you always bean bag a fumble!!!!!!) or the spot of the foul, whichever is best for the offended team. NE would have kept the ball. The officials ruled that the ball was legally in the endzone, thus regular rules apply and a safety properly ruled.

On his first penalty call, Steratore had a little Red Cashion in him. Drew out the doooown, but sans the Red drawl.

Late in the fourth quarter in the Pittsburgh/New England gameI saw a face mask but no penalty was called. That surprised me since it was Mike Carey's crew.

Thinking back to the Pitts game, seemed to me that there were some really interesting spots with close ups of the linesman in the second half. Seems like he had the play in front of him yet did not spot the ball rather looked accross the field for some help with the spots...I understand cross field mechanics, but on a play on the side line I would not think the covering official would not make the spot. In one case, it seemed after looking across the field he moved backwards over two yards and spotted the ball.
I will give credit on the sideline helmet to helmet hit called on Ryan Clark, I was surprised when I saw the flag because I did not think it was a late hit, but after the replay it was clear the hit was helmet to helmet, great call there by the side judge.
Lastly, on the Gronkoski TD or non TD, can't fault the guys on the field, they had good position with no hesitation. Fault the Pats and CBS for not getting a repaly quicker to check it out.
All in all I think Mike Carey and crew have had a tough year, they seem timid on the field IMO, maybe because of some earlier missed calls. That Patriots cannot blame the officials on the loss, they were pretty bad all game and I doubt that even if the batting was called, it would not have made much difference with 10 seconds left.
I also think there was one play where Ben was close to being over the LOS when the threw the ball, but there were already offsetting penalties on the play, so it would not have mattered, other than in a grade. There was one other time it looked like a Patiots offensive lineman threw a punch to the head in one of the scrums that was not called.
Not a great game for the crew in my eyes, but the outcome of the game was the correct one.
Also, if they can challenge a 12 men on they field call, which is just challenging a penalty, why can't they review something like batting? I guess because one is black and white and the other has some fuzzy areas.
