Strange on the forward progress call right before 2:00 minute warning, that Hittner dropped blue beanbag, then signaled first down for possession rather than signaling 3rd down. Tight, but the forward progress call was there. Hittner dropped his bean bag not to indicate fumble, but to mark the spot. It looked like Hittner had to cover a pileup and move away from his forward progress spot. So he dropped the bean bag to make sure his spot was covered. Yes, I agree, the signal of possession was my point. It was confusing, Hittner signaled first down, as if there were a change of possession. He should have signaled third down, which it was.

Good coverage on forward progress spot, I think it wise to bag the spot of forward progress when there is a scrum and the pile goes home in reverse. I think R85 was verbose as usual, get to expect that from a lawyer. Overall crew 3.75

Nice pics! Looked like a miserable day on the field, judging by those soaked jerseys.

A couple observations: 1. I had no problem with Vernon Davis being flagged for celebrating on the camera stand. This "it's all about me" stuff needs to be flagged. This is different from the Lambeau Leap where fans are participating in the celebration - it's not all about the player showing off with the leap. Not to mention the Lambeau Leap is specifically grandfathered under the new rules

The rules on celebrations are not new; they have been in place since 2006.
Although the league kept saying that Lambeau Leap and goalpost-dunking were "grandfathered in," it is more accurate to say that the rules were crafted around those situations to not exclude them.
That said, a leap (Lambeau or otherwise) will be penalized if more than one player is involved, which is a standing rule for coordinated celebrations.

Not to stray to far off topic here, but these close up shots of Ed Hochuli sure do show how he's aged. I had always thought of him as young looking.

Yes, the Lambeau Leap is the exception and I understand why the league allows it. I would have tagged Davis 15 yards for USC even if these celebrations we're banned. It violates the spirit of the game. I don't think the fore fathers of the NFL had these kind of demonstrations in mind when they established professional football. I'm glad the NFL cracks down on this.

This is why people refer to the NFL as the NO FUN LEAGUE. This is a sport players get excited and show emotion and they get a penality. Go back to the way it used tom be put fun back in the game. This league is trying to make this STERILE.

This league is trying to make this STERILE.[/ The way it used to be? You scored a touchdown, you handed the ball to the official and either run off the field or joined the huddle to prepare for the try. You caught a pass for a first down? Same thing. You made a nice open field tackle. You got up and either joined the defensive huddle or again ran off the field. That was professionalism. That is what is missing from all our sports.

Couldn't agree more, cj. I miss that too. You can still have passion and emotion, but not make the game all about you.
