I have been saying that this is both sides fault and I still believe that, neither the regulars nor the owners are right in this dispute...but...
yesterday was a shame. The Sunday night game had missed spots by over a yard (resulting in a measurement that showed the ball was over a yard short...really a measurement) and then there were numerous defensive holding calls on the outside where it looked as if little to no contact was made. These little things add up with 1st downs being given out left and right and it ruins the flow of the game for both teams. The inconsistency is what gets me, not just between different crews, but within the same crew and by the same official. I know it is hard to all be consistent, but at least get the crew on the same page.
I thought the wings were horrible in last nights game, every close up showed them looking either like a deer in headlights, or scared. My wife looked to me during the game and said that the white hat looked like he wanted to game over and to be someplace else. I agree, and I think it is because he could tell his wings were in over their heads.
After yesterday, these two both need to give a little and work this out...

Punt muff late in Pats-Ravens. Inadvertent whistle from the BJ or maybe the FJ/SJ. The whistle clearly blew as the ball went through the arms of the punt returner. The returner fell on the ball quickly, and I guess no one owned up to the whistle or they just chose to ignore it. Wow.

Usually, I contribute to National Football Post on Wednesdays. Because of the magnitude of the errors in the 49ers-Vikings game, I pushed to bump up to Monday morning. www.nationalfootballpost.com/Crew-hands-out-timeouts-challenges-like-Halloween-candy.htmlThis much is clear: The league wants to swap out an underperforming crew under their proposal for the CBA. The crew that presided over that mess also had the Monday night game, where Mike Tirico said "you can't trust any flag" and Jon Gruden "I don't know what you can say about these officials" (which is, by far, Gruden's most blistering commentary on anyone in his entire broadcast career). So the league has 20 replacement crews now. This is the test. If it is true to its proposal, they will sit this crew next week. If not, I will channel my best Col. Sherman Potter and declare "horsehockey!"

On 3 consecutive plays in the Steelers vs Raiders game.
1. Deep wing never moves and watches receiver and defensive back run past with questionable contact and no call. It's as if he did not know a play was being run. 2. Raider receiver catches a pass running toward sideline and is hit in the face with an arm before his 2nd foot comes down and is laid out with a head injury. Amazingly, he held onto the ball. No call for hit to head of defenseless receiver! 3. After returning from a tv commercial for the injured player, a pass into the end zone was incomplete and the receiver was hit with a violent hit with the top of the helmet to the defenseless receiver's face. The receiver was unconscious and attended to for 10-15 minutes and placed on a backboard, immobilized and removed by cart and taken to the hospital. There was no call made on the play.
On back to back plays, hits to defenless receivers heads went without fouls being called. Two players injured and removed from the game with head injuries. Did the first going uncalled lead to the second hit since no foul was called? And yes, CJ and Mike, the regulars, I suppose, could have missed calls like this. Perhaps you could point them out to me since I am not as familiar with all the calls the regulars have missed.
It's time for all parties involved to negotiate a settlement. I don't know, as Mike has suggested, that the the NFLRA hasn't offered more regarding the pension. I also don't know if the NFL has done anything more than demand the pension be ended. Hopefully they will continue negotiating and get it done. The ball seems to be in the NFL's hands to show it really does care about the integrity of the game.
At this point, the NFL's position hasn't been swayed by these injuries. Maybe the NFLPA will use the Oakland injuries as an example of the way things have gone with replacement officials to further bolster their claims in their letter to the NFL of last week. We will see if the NFL responds or if they really don't care and these injuries are just part of the game, since no one died. Yet!

jayjay - unfortunately or fortunately your MNF prediction lived up to your expectations - and for the real officials coming back, they are more ready than any of the replacements NOW - this second - and for your third recommendation re: the top administrator - NOW is the time for a replacement - and all fines handed out to players and coaches regarding the replacements should be absolved - NOW.
